I've explained briefly what each one is for, but if there's a species or type missing or organized incorrectly, please let me know! The folders are "loosely" defined in that similar-enough creatures are welcome, such as an owl-housecat Griffon, or reptilian Centaur. Descriptions explain the most common appearance and general guidelines of the creatures. :bademoticon: Bios, Info, Refs, etc.: Biographies, information, reference sheets or charts, and other descriptions about species and characters. No matter the type or species, all information-type submissions belong here. :bademoticon: Aliens: Extraterrestrial, sentient beings. Reptilians: Also known as Reptoids, Reptiloids, Saurians, or Draconians, they are reptilian, shapeshifting extraterrestrials popular in British folklore. The Greys: Small statured aliens with large heads and large black eyes. Popular in American folklore. :bademoticon: Avian Creatures: Creatures that have strong similarities to birds. Phoenixes: Fiery birds that renew themselves through a process of becoming ash and dying, and renewing their flame to live again. :bademoticon: Canine Creatures: Creatures that have similarities to dogs. Barghests: Also known as Bargtjest, Bo-guest, Bargheist, Bargheist, Barguist, Bargest, or Barguest, an English-born legend of a monstrous black spirit dog. Cerberus: In mythology, the three-headed dog guardian of the Greek underworld. Any multi-headed dogs may be uploaded here. Fu-Dogs: Also known as Foo Dogs, Chinese Guardian Lions, Imperial Guardian Lions, or Shi in Chinese, the guardian statues to ancient Chinese palaces, tombs, temples or other important locations. Hellhounds: The hounds from hell, often described as large, ethereal, and smelling like sulfur and may be pets to demons. :bademoticon: Chimeras: Mythological mixes of creatures. Griffons: Also known as Griffins or Gryphons, the legendary mix of the front half of an eagle and the back half of a lion. Hippogriffs: Also Hippogryphs, the legendary mix of the front half of an eagle and the back half of a horse. Manticores: A Persian mythological creature that has the body of a lion, sometimes a human face, sometimes bat wings, and the venomous tail of either scorpion or dragon. :bademoticon: Dinosaurs: Extinct animals with the exception of mammals like mammoths or oreodonts. Yes, this includes marine and flying reptiles for those who want to get technical. If a 4-year-old can point at it and say "dinosaur!" it belongs in this folder. :bademoticon: Dragons: Various kinds of dragons that are different from the subfolder types. Amphitheres: Legless, winged serpents that are commonly feathered. Drakes: Dragons that stand on four legs and have no wings. Europeans: Also known as Western Dragons, they stand on four legs and have large wings on their shoulders. Possibly the most well known type. Hydras: Dragons that have multiple heads. Imperials: Long Asian dragons that have five toes on one foot. There was a big deal about it back in the Chinese dynasties, where only the royals were allowed to bear a five-toed dragon on their clothing/armor. Knuckers: Small, slender European dragons that like to hide in holes or water wells and are of English origin. Orientals: Asian, serpent-like dragons that have four or less digits on each hand or foot. Raptors: A type I named to describe the dragons that walk on two legs, but have smaller arms like a dinosaur Wyverns: Dragons that have only hind legs and wings on their shoulders. Wyrms: Also known as a Lindworm or more commonly a Sea Serpent, commonly has either a single pair of legs or wings, but may or may not have have wings and/or legs. :bademoticon: Equine Creatures: Creatures that have similarities to horses. Hippocampi: Also known as sea-horses - Horses with lower body of a fish. Kelpies: A malevolent, Scottish, water spirit that may be able to adopt human form and/or retain hooves in this form. Kirins: Also known as Qilins, part-dragon, part-horse creatures of East Asian mythologies. Pegasi: Winged horses. Unicorns: Horses with horns that are commonly associated with magic. Winged Unicorns: Sometimes called Alicorns, a unicorn with wings that may be thought to be highly connected with magic. :bademoticon: Exoskeletons: Creatures that have natural armor and/or no skeletons in their bodies. Buglike: Exoskeletal creatures that appear very similar to bugs. :bademoticon: Fae Folk: Also known as Fairy, Fay, Fae, Faery, Faerie, the mythical, often magical, beings of the supernatural, ethereal, and/or spiritual planes. Commonly associated with nature. Banshees: Also known as the Bean Sith or Bean Nighe in Scottish mythology, banshees are typically female spirits in Irish mythology, but all of them are claimed to wail terribly and be an omen of death. Elementals: Fae or Fairies that are associated with elemental magic or traits. Imps: Smaller beings, either spiritual or physical, that are closely related to Fae folk or Goblins. Mythologies claim they were shapeshifters and/or the companions to witches. Sprites: The spiritual or ethereal beings that thrive in nature, closely associated with Fae folk, elves, and ghosts. Winged Fairies: The modern folklore of commonly small, child-friendly people with wings and magical abilities. :bademoticon: Feline Creatures: Creatures that have similarities to cats. :bademoticon: Gods or Godlike: Beings that are either gods in mythologies and legends or are original godlike characters. Angels: The angelic forces of good that commonly have human form with or without wings. Demigods: The half-god children of a god and a mortal. Demons: Also known as Daemons, the demonic forces of evil that commonly have human form with or without other subtle features. Devils: The most evil of forces, either in legend, religion, or as original characters. Higher Beings: Divine beings, ascended beings, or otherwise powerful, knowledgeable, or spiritual beings. May or may not be associated with nature's cycles or governing or protecting a concept or place. :bademoticon: Half Humanoids: Any creatures that have a strong portion of humanlike form in their anatomies, but are not fully human. Examples should include at least human shoulders/arms/chest, but not necessarily a humanlike head or lower body. Centaurs: The half-horse, half-human creatures of Greek and Roman mythologies. This folder includes nontraditional centaurs without either horse or human anatomies Harpies: The part-bird, part-woman creatures with beautiful voices that would lure in men to their doom. Mer Folk: The half-fish, half-humanlike creatures that may or may not be sirens and vary in appearance depending on the mythology or interpretation Minotaurs: The beastly cross of a man with a bull's head and may or may not have hooved feet and a bull's tail. Nagas: The half-snake, half-humanlike creatures of East Indian origin or original interpretation. Satyrs: Also known as Fawns, the half-goat, half-human creatures of Roman mythology. This folder includes nontraditional satyrs without either goat or human anatomies. Sphinxes: The part-human, part-lion creatures of Egyptian mythology, that commonly guarded special locations and loved riddles. This folder also includes original interpretations of sphinxes, but masked sphinxes share a different folder with masked creatures. :bademoticon: Humanoids: Creatures that resemble humans in structure, meaning they walk upright, have a humanlike body with two arms and two legs. Acephali - Headless: Including the Jack-O-Lantern man, beings that are headless and spooky, much like the Irish lore of the Headless Horseman. Anthros: Humanoids that walk upright but are animalistic in appearance, and may also be known as Furries. Dwarves: Short, stocky people who are commonly hairy and bearded. Elves: The modern folklore of elegant people with pointed ears. Ents: Tree-like beings that typically protect and care for forests. Halflings: Small, sometimes hairy, people with large feet. Ogres: Monstrous beings that are vaguely humanoid. Orcs: Believed to be a Tolkien invention, beastly humanoids who typically have dark green/brown skin, and bony facial features and upward jutting tusks from their jaws. Sirens: Female creatures who may or may not be beautiful and lure in men to their doom, with their beautiful, irresistible voices. Vampires: Undead, infected, born, or other, humans or other sentient creatures who are nocturnal and thirst for blood. Werebeasts: Infected, born, or other, humans or other sentient creatures who change into a beast either by full moon or other stimulus. Werewolves: Infected, born, other other, humans or other sentient creatures who change into a wolf or wolf-like beast on the full moon. :bademoticon: Hybrids: Creatures that are not Chimeras, but are hybrids of either fantastical or real creatures. :bademoticon: Masked: Creatures, often spiritual in nature, that have masks on their faces. Masks may be either removable or anatomical. Sphinxes: Unique, animalistic creatures whose masks may or may not resemble human faces. :bademoticon: Monsters: Often beastly, strong, or sometimes animalistic creatures that are malevolent or chaotic. Gargoyles: The demonic statues guardians meant to frighten away evil spirits, but may in fact be evil themselves. Goblins: A European folklore of mischievous, chaotic, small creatures with a grotesque, human-like stature. Golems: Magically created, humanoid creatures made of inanimate material, typically clay or stone, and originates from Jewish folklore. Gorgons: Hideous, female, humanoid creatures that have snakes as hair and a gaze that turns others to stone. Medusa is the most well-known of this species. Gremlins: Chaotic and more modernly mechanically oriented, they are Germanic in origin and have small, sometimes disfigured, humanoid bodies. Kobolds: Germanic, humanoid creatures that are typically opponents in video games, but are similar in origin to Gremlins. Kraken: A Norwegian/Greenland lore of an enormous sea monster, typically squid-like in appearance, that can capsize ships. Sea Monsters: Any monster that may dwell in the sea and terrorize sailors, create storms, or may be the origin of fearing certain waters. Trolls: Not the annoying internet user, but a Scandinavian, humanoid creature in origin. Typically hostile to humans, they are ugly, short, hairy, and dwell in solitude, although some may be mistaken as humans. :bademoticon: Original Species: A species of creature that is originally created by the owner. :bademoticon: Other: Any other creature or character that may not have a designated species goes here. Also submit here if you are not sure which folder something belongs, and the admins will sort it out. :bademoticon: Undead: Creatures and beings that have died but somehow are still living. Ghasts: Appearing as misty beings, they are similar to Ghouls, and mainly appear in D&D games. Typically chaotic, they are also known to have a terrible stench. Ghosts: Also known as a Spectre, Specter, Phantom, Apparition, or Spook, they are typically the spirits of those who have died. These ghosts are often chaotic and frightening. Ghouls: Arabian mythology of an evil spirit that consumes human flesh. Shadows - Shades: Sometimes the spirit of those in the Greek underworld, Shadows/Shades are also spooky spirits who appear to be a part of darkness itself and go about causing fright. Skeletons: The undead, often hollow or hallowed, remnants of beings are used as mindless minions for more cunning magical masters, may wander and haunt the night, and often appear as enemies in video games. Spirits: Similar to Ghosts in that they are the spirit of someone who died, they may be more helpful, be able to speak, or guide others than the common conception of a malevolent, chaotic ghost. Zombies: The opposite of Ghosts and Spirits, the body left behind from death is resurrected either through magic or a virus and may vary in intelligence and problem solving based on the story. :bademoticon: Multiple Creatures Together: For when several different kinds of creatures are depicted in the same picture.
